May 10, 2008 - Your Band

So. I'm asking another question for the masses. Without knowing if it has been asked before, and not sympathizing too much if it has.

I find myself often scrolling through my tunes list, my MP3, my albums... years back cassettes, music DVDs, past records dumped in my bookshelf-...

And wonder, who was 'YOUR band' BEFORE Smashing Pumpkins? And I mean, and I'm regarding the fans here of course, (Presuming SP is their favorite band, for those who read this/respond) did you have an 'all-time favorite' band before discovering the joys of SP? If so was/were they it something/somone embarrassing? Do you regret, relive or still regard them as one of your favorite bands/artists?

Or was there nothing before SP?

Or if someone asked you right now, saying you had never discovered the Pumpkins- who would your 'favorite' artist/band be? Would it be the same back before you enjoyed the Pumpkins? Or has your music taste dramatically changed?

-I'd love to hear what other Pumpkins fans listen/listened to before and currently asides from the great SP.

-Certainly be interesting to hear if anyone listens to similar bands asides from 'ones' including Billy or Jimmy.

Whether SP is 'YOUR' band, or not.

before i started listening to the smashing pumpkins at 14 i really liked nirvana and shoegaze music i'd make on tapes off alternative radio (mbv, ride, swervedriver, the jesus and mary chain's poppier moments, color me badd (i was 13?), crappy indie rock i heard on college radio like silkworm and cub, i dunno, i'm kind of a music nerd). i was kind of obsessed with the singles soundtrack but always skipped drown cause i thought the smashing pumpkins was a stupid band name i wanted nothing to do with until the first spin cover came out and i decided they were the cute band alert to end all cute band alerts.

like most self interested arty types, i sort of abandoned the smashing pumpkins before my 16th birthday since indie/punk/sonic youth recommended/straight edge hardcore/early emo/metal/teenage hipsterdom was an arena where i could be a participant rather than a spectator. despite being so arguably geeked that i post on smashingpumpkins.com (shudder), i hadn't actually heard melancholy until about a year ago.

last febuary, on a whim, i decided it'd be fun to dump a bunch of SP on my iPod and see how it held up against answer two to this, a fcukload of spacemen 3 and my bloody valentine rarities (still kind of religious to me somehow, my bloody valentine have been a personal favorite for over half my life), la monte young and other such dream syndicate beauts and whateverthe[bad word removed], errr, nirvana? early roxy music? late roxy music? kraut rock? forever changes by love? fela kuti? the sun city girls? jay z? i dunno. music is vast in the digital age.

equal to my experimental/high art type music friend's horror, and how fcuking funny that is considering they all like wu tang, something about the music "grabbed" me pretty deeply and it kind of took over my musical interests. the truth that i'm kind of a mouthy lil btich despite my sweeter, chlidlike qualities makes billy corgan a pretty realistic role model for me i suppose. the deeper i got into demos, the more sense that made, then superchrist was released which is, basically, the song i've been itching to hear for the past 10 years (live, that violin bit doesn't really make any sense to me and the vocals sound better when they're harder to hear (i hate the clean production on them on the fresh cuts version in all frankness, despite the guitars being stellar), but, [bad word removed], maybe it'll evolve and maybe i'm a psych purist besides which, i don't really think i'm their target market, i felt like a fashion alien when i went to their concert).

placebo weren't that bad.. listen to them today and you will still find something good in them. Sure, they don't even compare to SP but they had some good songs in their day

my parents influenced my taste in music a lot...

i can fully understand where you are coming from i was always into electronic music originally and still massivly am, think richie hawtin, sven vath etc. and a load of other names no one here will have heard of. the pumpkins and a few other bands opened my eyes to this type of music, i think it was just that i never discovered or had give it a chance before. no looking back now i listen to the pumpkins and other bands all the time but i still equally love electronic music i dont see any wrong in liking completley different styles

Here's a strange story....

I was exclusively a rap fan pre-Pumpkins; Dr. Dre, Snoop, Too Short, etc. What I find the strangest is that I used to watch a lot of MTV, but the first Pumpkins video I ever saw was Disarm, which was the 3rd video from SD. I immediately became a fan - which is wierd - how do you go from rap to Disarm? I dunno...

without a doubt...
